We are constantly reminded that human nature has not changed very considerably during the past twenty, or twenty-five centuries. The old faults and failings, hopes and fears, loves and hatreds, pleasures and disappointments, are continually recurring; and though much of the conversation is put into the mouths of beasts, it is genuine human thought and feeling that prompt the utterance."

. Tales from the Panchatantra by Alfred Williams, Translator India:
Eastern Book House
,
1985
Cloth. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. ABOUT THE BOOK Tales from the Panchatantra The Indian belief and transmigration, which effaces the difference between human and animal words, has resulted in a more extensive literature of animal stories than in any other country, not only in single tales, but whole story-books. The Panchatantra was the most striking work of this type. In giving us these tales, Mr. Williams has further restored them to their original source in India, were now five different Sanskrit, variant forms survive, Purnabhadra's recession, which he has used as his text, being the earliest. I have read all his translations through, and the impression they produce is one of fidelity to the text, making allowance for his simplifications, which do not affect the narrative. I have therefore no doubt Mr. Williams readers will not only derive much pleasure from these tales, but also from the results of any further studies of Indian fables which he may undertake.
