[OLIVER GOLDSMITH]. The Life of Richard Nash of Bath, Esq. ; Extracted Principally from his Original Papers.  London: Printed for J. Newbury, in St. Paul’s Church-yard; and W. Frederick, at Bath. [ii], vi, 234pp. 8vo (7˝ x 5 inches).  Fine engraved portrait frontispiece, without the terminal publisher’s catalogue found in some copies.  Finely bound in early twentieth century full tan calf, spine and all edges gilt; extremities a little rubbed, but a lovely copy.
First edition, commissioned by the publisher John Newbery, perhaps in anticipation of Goldsmith’s trip to Bath in the summer of 1762, prompted by poor health  Written with Goldsmith’s characteristic speed, the Life appeared in October 1762, full of anecdotes collected on the spot and also from Nash’s own papers.  Nash – “the King of Bath” – died in 1761, and Goldsmith gives an engaging portrait of a man from the middling rank who reached the pinnacle of Bath’s wildly heterogeneous society, with its aristocrats, wealthy tradesmen, gamblers, rakes, social climbers, and all manner of hypochondriacs.  Goldsmith’s biography is generally assumed to have been influenced by his friend Samuel Johnson's Life of Richard Savage, and it also drew upon architect John Wood’s Essay towards a Description of Bath.
