THE NEW BATH GUIDE: or, MEMOIRS OF THE B-N-R-D FAMILY
In a series of Poetical Epistles
by CHRISTOPHER ANSTY
Printed by J WRIGHT, Denmark-Court, Strand, London; for VERNON and HOOD, J CUTHELL, OGILVY and SON, J WALKER, LACKINGTON, ALLEN and CO, J NUNN, OTRIDGE and SON, and R LEA; 1801; New Edition
We are offering for sale a copy of the above title that is in Very Good condition.  Bound in full mottled tan calf with decorative giltwork to the spine; gilt titles have worn away although the impression can still be seen; board joints are starting to split, and front board is a little relaxed.  Pages are clean and joints firm.  All five black and white engravings are present and intact, and the frontespiece has a tissue guard.  Previous owner's ink inscription on front flyleaf, dated 1804.  Ribbon page marker.
"CHRISTOPHER ANSTY was for many years MP for Trumpington near Cambridge and lived quietly as a country squire, dabbling in Latin verse, which included a translation of Gray's Elegy  ...  Following regular visits to Bath from 1760, Anstey published his verse satire The New Bath Guide in 1766.  Its enormous success made him a local celebrity, and in 1770, he came to live in the newly built Royal Crescent.  In a letter of 1785, he described himself as 'one of those unfashionable and tasteless People who think Bath no bad Country seat'."
