Falconer, William
An Essay On The Bath Waters
London: For T. Lowndes, 1770. In Four Parts. Containing a Prefatory Introduction on the Study of Mineral Waters in General. Part I. An Account of their possible Impregnations. II. The most approved Means to be used for the Discovery of their Contents. III. Experiments on the Bath Waters, with an Application of the foregoing Rules, to the Discovery of their Contents. IV. An Application of the Whole to the Practice of Pharmacy and Medicine. First Edition. 12mo. [2]ff, 275pp. Old calf covers (rebacked, new endleaves). Entirely uncut, and with some sheets unopened. The original stab holes and those from a second sewing are visible, and in places touch the text. Title-page and a few margins a little dust-soiled, and a few light spots. The work was republished, in two volumes, in 1772. William Falconer (1744-1824) moved from Chester to Bath in January 1770, and in 1784 was appointed to the Bath General Hospital. This was his first published work, and was followed by a pile of others. Bookseller Inventory #ebc23

Ebay wisdompedlars 25/9/2011 Poor ex-lib copy sold on Ebay for £60 including p&p
A small work, bound (once) with a leather spine and marbled paper covered boards. Measuring approx 17.5cm x 10.5cm x 2cm.. As can be seen from the photos the front and rear boards are detached. The boards are scuffed, dented and chipped, and the paper to boards is peeling and darkened. The spine is creased and cracked, and the top and bottom is chipped with loss. Internally the fixed endpaper has large loss. Endpapers are creased and browned/grubby. There is a stamp to title page (Royal College of Surgeons Ireland), a name to top (rubbed), and a couple of pencil letters. The reverse of title page has a stamp (Arthur Jacob Bequest) and some pencil letters. There is some brown staining to title page and following few leaves, and last few leaves and some pale staining to margins to most pages therafter. Lightly grubby, foxed and browned throughout, touch heavier in places. Contents are beginning to crack in a couple of places, and thus a couple of leaves are gently detaching. In very readable and mostly tight condition.
An interesting work, studying the qualities of the Waters in Bath.
Rare!
With a dedicated to Dr. John Fothergill
