ANSTEY, Christopher.]

(Appleby in Westmorland Cumbria, CMA, United Kingdom) Price: £ 40.00
Book Description: Bath: Printed by John Browne, 6, Bridge-Street, and sold by Didier and Tebbett, 75, St. James's-Street, London, 1809. 8vo (162 x 100mm.), viii,144p. engraved vignette title and 11 stipple-engraved plates, drawn and engraved by Francis Eginton of Birmingham, some slight soiling to the first few gatherings. Later, 19th century, buff linen, ms paper back label. The engraved title and plates dated 1807. A nice provincially printed edition of an immensely popular, and highly celebrated, satire which ran to around forty editions - mainly printed in London or Dublin. The adventures of Squire Blunderhead and his family and the manners of the fashionable town are all retailed which grace and good humour. Walpole held that `so much humour, fun and poetry, so much originality, never met together before', while Smollett drew on Anstey's book for Humphrey Clinker.
