Written by J.F.Meehan, the full title of this limited edition work is ‘More Famous Houses of Bath & District. Being the Second Series of the Work’.
It was published by B. & J.F.Meehan of Bath in 1906. There’s an introduction by Egerton Castle. The book measures roughly 26 x 17 cm (10¼ x 6¾ inches), has xvi and 248 pages, an index and list of subscribers. It is bound in the original red cloth with gilt lettering.
The book’s has a coloured plate at the front and about 50 reproductions of original drawings and rare prints in the author’s own collection.
Originally published as a series of articles in ‘The Beacon’ (a Somerset journal), this is collection work is a well-illustrated study of some of the famous and historic houses of Bath and its area, including the stately homes of Badminton. Longleat and Dyrham, and Pulteney Bridge in Bath itself. The edition was limited to 500 copies only.
The covers are are slightly dirty and the spine’s faded. The corners and spine ends are bumped. Inside there’s some slight foxing. The front hinge is cracked and the spine is also cracked at page 81 and so the contents are slightly shaken. Otherwise it’s in very good condition.
