Printed by J.B.Nichols & son for the Wiltshire Topographical Society, 1845. First Edition.With engraved portrait & title vignette, 4to., patterned cloth gilt. Covers little faded & marked, spine slightly chafed at head & foot, else a very good copy. Pasted to the front free-endpaper is an engraved portrait of Britton with his pencilled inscription: "To W.B. Browne Esq. from J. Britton, Sep 26/43." This was the first serious biography, and according to Lawson Dick, "provides a detailed and sympathetic defence of Aubrey from the onslaughts of his Victorian disparagers. Britton was born in the same village as Aubrey - there is a stained glass window to them in the church at Kington St. Michael." Spine has five raised bands with gilt lettering and decorations in the compartments. Minor rubbing and chipping to the corners, edges, and head & tail of spine. Joints show some moderate wearing. Marbled endpapers. Previous owner's book plate on paste-down endpaper. Pages have minor browning and spotting throughout. Top edge gilt. Overall very good condition. A handsome copy. Highly collectible.
