08/1999 ABE:
Stukeley,William. STONEHENGE: A TEMPLE RESTOR'D TO THE BRITISH DRUIDS. [WITH] ABURY, A TEMPLE OF THE BRITISH DRUIDS, WITH SOME OTHERS DESCRIBED. [LONDON: FOR THE AUTHOR,1743.] London: W. Innnys and R. Manby, [1740.] [Actually 1838]. Folio. 13 3/4 x 8 1/2" [10],66,[4];[4],vi,102,vipp. 19th c. 1/2 morocco over cloth boards, banded spine, gilt, chipped at head, a.e.g., marbled endpapers; dampstain in lower corner, occ. dark, some foxing to plates; some cellotape repairs to folds of folding plates; lower edge of frontispiece cut off [no text loss]. 76 full-page (many folding); text cuts, decorative elements. William Stukeley (1687-1765), physician and later clergyman, was one of the co-founders of the Society of Antiquities. Archaeologists still refer to Stukeley's plates and to the volumes of his manuscript notes and sketches, many of them now in the Bodleian Library at Oxford, as accurate accounts, often the only ones ever made, of monuments now vanished," (Michell, p.10). Stukeley later became very involved wi
th studying the Druids. "It was not merely the arts and skills of these peoplethat he learnt to admire, but the sublime nature of their philosophy. Suddenly he was seized by an idea, so grand and noble, it affected his entire cast of mind, the idea that the Druids had first proclaimed in Britain the very same principles of true, patriarchal religion as were now upheld by the Church of England." Mitchell,p12. "While Stukeley's Patriarchal Religion was for a time forgotton, his advocacy for a Druidical origin for Avebury, Stonehenge and other stone circles long continued to consolidate and reinforce what was now an established piece of national folk-lore.' Piggot, The Druids,151p. The influence of his works was particularly strong on Blake and can be seen in the antiquarianism and romanticism about the Druids that followed him, "...he had erected a fantastic fabric of theory around which even more queer romantic pavilions and turreets piled up in the course of the second half of the century. The Druids became t
he philosopher-priests who campioned ancient liberty against the brutal Romans; they knew the secrets of the universe and the mysteries of the heavens." Piggot, William Stukeley.NY:1985.2nd ed,158p. This is a facsimile reprint of the 1740-1743 editions of Stukeley's important Druidical works. It was acomplished c1838. The paper is thicker and whiter than the original but it doesn't state that it is a reprint. NSTC 2S45417 & 2S45419. Graves 1585. Bonser/Troy 1212. Krown & Spellman, Booksellers: $600.00. (approx. £371)
