Item Description: Folio (16 6/8 x 11 inches). 28 engraved maps coloured in outline, including 2 world maps showing the "Tracks & Discoveries of Capt.n Cook", all double page, and one also folding, and one plain engraved plate of an Armillary Sphere (occasional light browning, some of the maps with short tears at gutter fold without loss). Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spine with green leather gilt lettering piece 'Maps to Cook's Voyages' (extremities worn, front cover detached, spine defective at head and tail, chips to lettering piece). Provenance: From the Foljambe library removed from Osberton Hall. Later edition, first published with Guthrie's "New System of Geography" in London in 1770, and often reprinted. The first American edition, with much additional material and many maps relating to America was published in two volumes in 1794 and 1795. Sabin 29327.

Folio (16 6/8 x 10 4/8 inches). 28 engraved maps coloured in outline, including 2 world maps showing the "Tracks & Discoveries of Capt.n Cook", all double page, and one also folding, and one plain engraved plate of an Armillary Sphere ("Seven United Provinces" with closed tear crossing the map, "West Indies" with marginal tear to right-hand edge affecting the image repaired at an early date, occasional light browning, staining, some of the maps with short tears at gutter fold without loss, some fore-edges strengthened on the verso at an early date). Contemporary half calf over marbled boards (extremities worn). Provenance: with the engraved armorial bookplate of Henry Oxenford Aveline Maybery on the front paste-down. Later edition, first published with Guthrie's "New System of Geography" in London in 1770, and often reprinted. The map of "Asia" depicts the partial coastline of New Guinea; and maps relating to America include "North America", "British Colonies in North America", "States of America", "West Indies", and "South America". The first American edition, with much additional material and many maps relating to America was published in two volumes in 1794 and 1795. Sabin 29327. |
