Nuova Raccolta delle Principali Vedute Antiche e Moderne dell’ alma Citta di Roma e sue vicinanze incise a bullino … l’Anno 1824.
[translation: New Collection of the Principal Views both Ancient and Modern of the city of Rome and its vicinity engraved ... in 1824]
Rome: presso Giacomo Antonelli, [no date but circa 1824].
Oblong 8vo (5 ¼ x 8 ¼ inches). Engraved throughout: title with integral vignette, 70 plates (views of Rome and her vicinity) by F. Parboni (49), P. Parboni (5) and F. Rinaldi (16). Condition: some spotting and old dampstaining, corners rounded, some surface soiling to first and last few leaves.
Original limp paper wrappers (rebacked with early cloth and marbled paper). Condition: rubbed scuffed, repaired tears.
An excellent small-scale ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir from an important Roman artist: from the last generation of engraved Rome view books before the trade was superseded by photography. This collection was apparently available for a number of years and in a number of forms, with the plate count varying from about 50 to 100 views. The present collection at $600 = less than $9.00 per plate. A similar but slightly later collection of 100 plates is currently on offer at $1765 = $17.65 per plate (almost double the price!). |
