Bibliographic References

This watercolour, one of a pair in matching oak frames, shows the south aspect of Reading Abbey gateway in the Regency period. The building partly shown on the right is Reading Ladies Boarding School which was attended by Jane Austen and her younger sister Cassandra in 1785-1786, not long before this was painted. Female figures in the picture are probably pupils of the school.
