With 240 fine colour plates, including 7 vignette coloured half-titles illuminated in gilt (all plates present as called for).
The attractive plates were drawn by Alexander Francis Lydon and printed from coloured woodblocks by the Baxter process by Benjamin Fawcett of Driffield, Yorkshire. The plates are noted for their precise printing and rich colouring and Fawcett printed each plate in an average of eight colours. Friedman in 'Color printing in England, 1486-1870' remarks that Fawcett's ink tones are so subtle and transparent that they have the appearance of watercolour and that his transparent colours were especially suited to Lydon's crisply-drawn renderings of immaculately tidy grounds bathed in sunlight and with gardens abloom. In 'The Illustrator and the Book', Ray opines that this work accomplishes for colour printing what Pyne's Royal Residences did for aquatint engraving
