32 full page 'proof' plates including frontispiece.
Bound in full leather, the covers are detached. Leather on the spine is rubbed and worn, the leather on the covers is still in reasonable condition.
All pages and plates are accounted for, no loss. Generally bright and clean, although some foxing to the frontispiece and some light toning and marking to the frontis and title page. A couple of foxing spots in other places and some minor marking.

FIRST EDITION, LARGE PAPER COPY, frontispiece (tissue guard), 31 engraved proof plates on India paper (each with tissue guard), 12 engraved vignettes in the text, very mild foxing to preliminary and final leaves, pp.[viii], xii, 128, 4to., near contemp. half red morocco, smooth backstrip longitudinally gilt lettered within ornate floral border designs, red moiré cloth sides, blindstamped rules on returns, minor shelfwear at board extremities, a.e.g., yellow chalked endpapers, contemp. steel-engraved bookplate of Robert Vaughan Hughes of Wyelands on front pastedown, publisher’s advertisement tipped to front free endpaper (see note), near fine Tipped at front is a 4-page publisher’s advertisement with list of subscribers (with wood-engraved vignette on title) dated March 1823; if we are to believe the contents of this pamphlet, it would seem the work was first published in 8 separate parts, beginning in April 1823 with Part I. The present work is therefore the first single volume, large paper edition. Engravings are by Radcliffe after drawings by Westall, Dewint, Barber, and Mackenzie. Some thirty years after publication, in 1862, James Jaffray issued a reprint of this work. He noted in the preface that the "even the commonest copies" of the 1829 edition were to be found ".only in the libraries of the wealthy.".

Large format. 14.5" x 10". 32 b/w plates and this edition contains the extra 12 proof b/w vignettes. xii + 8 pages of Historical Remarks plus 128 pages. Black leather spine and corners, elaborate gilt decorations to spine. Marbled edges. Some chipping to leather on corners. Front board lightly marked. Frontis and preceding pages foxed. A few scattered foxspots to contents. In general the plates are bright and clean. Bookplate to front pastedown. Spine ever so slightly rubbed at edges. A super copy of this special edition.

Proof plates on india paper. Attractive modern half leather binding with marbled paper boards by Period Bookbinders, Bath. Tiny scuff to lettering piece. New eps. Teg. Text very clean, only a handful of marks: one or two paper faults causing slight creasing; small stain to p56; light browning to p81 and light stain at head of pages 87-90. Contains 32 plates and 12 vignettes, all marked proof. Only 1 plate has any browning to image, 23 are remarkably clean and the other 8 have some light browning to edges. One or two have a very small closed tear to outer margin. Not to be confused with the later edition of 1862. A lovely copy.
