Warner, Rev. Richard
Price: US$ 594.54
Book Description: Bath: R. Cruttwell, 1801. First edition. Woodcut vignette on the title and 3 woodcut route maps. 8vo. [219 x 131 x 23 mm]. [2]ff, 346, [2] pp. Eton binding of c.1822 of blue polished calf, the covers with a gilt border of a double rope fillet and a palmette and anthemion roll. The spine divided into six panels, lettered in the second and fifth, the others elaborately tooled in gilt, the corners of the edges of the boards hatched in gilt, the turn-ins tooled with a gilt roll, marbled endleaves and edges. (Joints slightly rubbed and traces of recolouring). With the half-title and final leaf of Corrigenda. A good copy in a very attractive Eton binding, probably by Ingleton. Warner (1763-1857) was curate of St. James's, Bath from 1795 until 1817. His clerical duties allowed him time for some lengthy excursions, and he was able to describe most of the great and many of the lesser houses in the region. Inscribed in ink on the front endleaf: "Given to J. [or T.] Knowlys by the Hon.ble Richard French 27 July 1822" and in pencil "One of Grandfather Knowlys Eton leaving books". Bookplate of George Strode of Newnham Park, Devon.
