(vol. II); text sl. spotted. Vol. I in orig. green cloth by Anthony Birdsall, lettered in gilt on spine; sl. rubbed and marked. Vol. II in orig. darker green, lettered in gilt on spine; sl. rubbed and marked. Booklabel of E. Pretty on front pastedowns, with signature of E. Pretty on front pastedown of vol. II, a few sm. library blindstamps. A good copy of a mixed set. With an autobiography, bibliography by T.E. Jones, and an appendix. Britton's prolific writings on the topography and architecture of Britain were so well-received that in 1845 the Britton Club was formed and funds raised to facilitate the writing of his autobiography. Subscribers included Britton's partner for many of his works, E.W. Brayley, the Cubitt family, themselves builders & civil engineers, George Godwin, J.H. Le Keux, David Roberts, and many other people of note, especially artists, archtects, and builders. This copy presented to Edward Pretty Esq. F.S.A. 'as a Reciprocal Compliment for the Subscription to the Testimonial recorded in the List, at the End of the Appendix'. Signed John Britton on the presentation leaf. With a photographic portrait of Britton laid in as an additional frontispiece. Loosely inserted are: 1. Illustrated ALS from Britton to Pretty, March 10 '29 inquiring about a planned trip to Leicester and asking him to ' make a more correct sketch of the two Archs in N. side of the Church.' 17 lines on one page, with small drawing of the arches. 2. An 8pp. prospectus for the publication of the Autobiography with a list of subscribers. Printed for the author for distribution to the Subscribers to the Britton Testimonial. 1846. Jones, is a bibliography of works from 1800-1849, and the third part is an appendix. Britton was "one of the most continuously productive writers of his time", being the author of numerous books on the antiquities and topography of Great Britain. He was so popular that the Britton Club was formed in 1845, and "a sum of nearly £1,000 was raised by a subscription, Britton having previously intimated his intention to devote any money so raised to the publication of an autobiography". Very Scarce 2 volume set from 1850. Both volumes have some light water damping to the prelims, otherwise clean and tight. Presentation plate to the First Volume including the signature of John Britton. This copy was presented to the author George Ormerod in 1850 and his plate is present on the inner cover. Opposite, on the fep, is a pasted in letter from John Britton himself dated July 30th 1850 and a press clipping dated 1857 of the death of Britton. (Jan 1st 1857). Some insecting to the second volume, rear blank stuck down to the second volume. Corners and edges worn, leather spine and corners worn/chipped. Very Scarce Set
