ANTIQUE BOOK 1788 Ed. New Bath Guide Christopher Anstey- Interesting Provenance!
This is a beautiful and rare hardback early edition of the brilliant 18th Century satirical work, The New Bath Guide Or Memoirs of the B---N---R---D Family, by Christopher Anstey.
The owner of this book makes it all the more interesting. It is signed at the front "James Willis, Sopley, 1797". I researched him and this is in fact the Reverend James Willis who lived at Sopley Hall in Hampshire at this time, as well as being the local vicar.
His other claim to fame was to help introduce Merino breed of sheep to the area which for a long time provided many of the locals with a living at the local mills. His work earned him a memorial at Westminster Abbey.
There is also a newspaper cutting which comes from "The Gentleman's Magazine" May 1796 edition, which again is inscribed by the Revd Willis and features a drawing of a gentleman called John Green, who had reached the grand old age of 102!! And this was in 1796!!
The book itself is in fairly good condition given that it is 230 years old. The hard back has wear and some spine damage at the top, see pics, but the pages are complete and in very good shape.
