The Historic Guide to Bath
Wright (G.N), Rev:
Price: £ 48.00
Book Description: R E Peach, Bath, 1864. 16mo., First and Sole Edition, with an engraved frontispiece,16 engraved illustrations (several full-page) in the text, but bound without the folding map, contemporary signature on title, some very light and generally negligible spotting; original pebble-grained green cloth, sides elaborately decorated in gilt, backstrip pictorial gilt extra, uncut, a remarkably bright, crisp, clean copy. With 52pp of trade advertisements bound in at end and the contemporary binder's ticket of Bone & Son on rear paste-down.One of the finest mid-nineteenth century guides to what was still Britain's most fashionable watering-place. Clearly written, and conveying more detail than many of its competitors, it includes an unusually full index and a brief itinerary of places of interest within a seven-mile radius. Of special interest are four extended essays (on geology, roman remains, flora and zoology) written specifically for the work by Moore, Scarth, Jenyns and Terry respectively.A really lovely copy, making the absence of the map (which very possibly was never present) all the more tragic.Extremely scarce in any condition.Anderson, p.254.
