Abay 200507 unwinsbooks £22 + p&p
This auction is for a superb VICTORIAN hardback edition entitled "A Handbook for Residents and Travellers in Wilts and Dorset," and with SIX fold-out colour maps (there are two fold-out general county maps in the wallets inside each cover of the book, i.e. a Dorset and a Wiltshire county map published with but not physically attached to the book) and six other plans.

It was published by John Murray, of Albemarle Street, London, in 1899.

The maps and plans are:

·       General Map of Wilts

·       Marlborough, Devizes, and Calne Downs

·       Plans of Avebury

·       Ground-Plan of Salisbury Cathedral

·       Salisbury and District

·       Plans of Stonehenge

·       Dorchester and Weymouth

·       Bridport and Beaminster

·       General Map of Dorset

The 712 pages have rounded corners, are neat and a little faded with age.  The fold out maps are good for their age – the Wiltshire map is however more heavily worn and partially split around the folds.  The binding is a little fragile but good with no missing pages (the end paper and half-title page is detached but not missing).  There is a previous owner’s pencil signature “P. J. Home” at the front, and a couple of minor pencil markings in the book.  The title page is neatly blind-stamped by the publisher “Presented by Mr Murray”.

The original embossed red cloth hardback cover is in fair condition for its age with heavy wear (frayed around the spine) and is grubby.  The gold on the front board and spine is good.
