Wherein is a more particular account of the first and patriarchal religion; and of the peopling of the British Islands. by Stukeley (William) First edition, London: Printed for the Author: And Sold by W. Innys and R. Manby, B. Dod, J. Brindley, and the Booksellers in London, 1743. With large folding plan frontispiece, and 39 of 40 copper engraved plates, several of which are folding, the missing plate is the 'Scale of Cubits and Feet', vi + 102 + vi page index, folio, recent half calf, raised bands, leather label, marbled boards, some plates lightly browned to top and fore-edge margins, some off-setting, small amount of light foxing, 3 light red lines on one plate. With the engraved armorial bookplate of Sir William FFolkes. Book Description: 1743, 1743. London: Printed for the Author, 1743. Folio. Orig. full calf (rebacked preserving the orig. spine strip; corners strengthened). Slightly rubbed. (vi, vi, 102, vi pp.). With fold. engrv. frontispiece and 39 full-page engrv. plates 3 of which are fold. Fine. NOTE: Abury or Avebury in Wiltshire, England is amongst the oldest villages east of Bristol with vast megalithic stone circles of uncertain date and origin. It has been said that these remains 'as much excell Stonehenge as a Cathedral does a parish church'.
