Hogarth


This area of the website is dedicated to the engraved works of William Hogarth (1697-1764).

Prints come from various editions which fall into the following five categories:

1. William Hogarth (to 1764)
Prints published during the artist's lifetime, up to his death in 1764.

2. Jane Hogarth (from 1765 to 1789).
On Hogarth's death, ownership of the plates passed to his widow, Jane Hogarth.

3. Boydell
After Jane Hogarth's death in 1789 the plates passed to her cousin who sold them to the publisher John Boydell.

4. Baldwin, Craddock & Joy ("Heath edition" 1822)
The plates were purchased by the publisher Baldwin, Craddock & Joy at the Boydell sale of 1818. They published the last edition from Hogarth's original plates in 1822. The eminent engraver William Heath had previously been engaged to perform minor restoration work on the plates.

5. Thomas Cook 1806
From "Hogarth Restored. The Whole Works of the celebrated William Hogarth" where all prints were from new plates engraved by Thomas Cook from 1796 onwards.
