This is William Burge's design for a bridge over the Avon gorge from Clifton. Burge published a lithograph of this image, drawn on stone by William Gauci, in 1830. I've used the title of the lithograph as the title for this watercolour. The design was entered in the 1831 competition to find a design for an "iron suspension bridge". However, as it was a design for a stone bridge, it wasn't a serious contender! |
