Presented on the right is a comprehensive list of Wiltshire county maps. Each is listed with a reference number, the dates of all known issues and attribution. The latter is the name either of the cartographer, engraver, author of the first work containing the map or first publisher of the map.
The reference numbers have been allocated in chronological sequence of the dates of first issue.
The attribution names act as links to pages that describe the maps and contain examples, with photographs, of any examples of the map from my collection, and maps for sale, sold or wanted. The total number of such examples in the site is currently 322.
Maps have been cross-referenced with a catalogue of County Atlases derived from the bibliographies of R A Skelton and Donald Hodson.
Note that this is very much a work in progress. Descriptive text has yet to be written for most of the maps. Nevertheless I hope it may still provide an interesting resource for anyone interested in this field. I would, of course, welcome contributions of any kind - information, suggestions, photographs and even copies of maps. |
