Wiltshire County Maps
6 6 : Speed, John 1611

John Speed produced his decorative and innovative series of county maps in 1610 for his atlas "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine". These were the first maps to include boundaries for all the hundreds. The addition of town plans, vignette views and heraldic devices gave the maps far greater visual appeal, although the cartographical content was copied from Saxton or Norden. The Wiltshire map is one of the most attractive thanks to the view of Stonehenge. It also features a famous error whereby the village of North Burcombe is wrongly named as "Quare". This error was copied on numerous subsequent maps until eventually corrected in the 1722 edition of Morden's map.

Proof copies exist that may have been printed before 1610. After this there were many editions up to 1656. The most obvious changes to the plate are the publishers' imprints:

1 1610, 1614, 1627, 1646 John Sudbury and George Humble
2 1662 Roger Rea
3 1676 Bassett & Chiswell
4 1713 Henry Overton
5 1743 Henry Overton (date 1610 removed)
(6 1770 Dicey & Co - no copy yet found for Wilts)

There were minor intermediate changes to the plate but the most significant change was the addition of roads in the Overton edition.

There were changes on the versos which can be blank or have text for which there are numerous variations. There is also a scarce edition of 1616 with Latin text.
