18 19 : Morden, Robert 1695

This map was produced for Gibson's revised edition of Camden's Britannia.

Editions were published in 1695, 1722, 1753 and 1772. The plate was revised twice - for the 2nd and 3rd editions.

The 1695 edition is on thin paper with quite narrow margins.

The paper of the 1722 edition is thicker, the margins are wider and there's usually a watermark of a horse within a circle. In the second state the famous error by which the name of North Burcombe was recorded as Quare in Speed's map was finally rectified.

The paper of 1753 is smoother and thicker and has no watermark. In the third state many roads were delineated by two lines instead of one.

In the last edition of 1772 the impression is weak due to the worn condition of the plate.
