Wiltshire County Maps
12.1 15 : Overton, John 1675

Following the Fire of London in 1666 John Overton began building a set of engraved plates of the English counties. Only five were produced, one of which was Wiltshire (c1680), copied from Jansson (see wm/12) by an unknown engraver. The Wiltshire map can be distinguished from its Dutch original by the absence of a full stop after the county name in the title. Also, the quality of the engaving of the faces of the figures in the cartouche and the numerous putti, is distinctly inferior to that of the Jansson original.

Maps appeared in four editions of John Overton's atlases up to 1700.

Henry Overton (John's son) published further atlases in c1716 and c1738.

When Dicey & Co acquired the plates c1756 the Wiltshire map was modified to give it a new title "A Map of Wiltshire".
